Silence of the Lambs poster analysis

The film Silence of the lambs is recognised as one of the best films in Horror history.
Clarice Starling, a young intelligent FBI trainee, has been sent to the Baltimore state hospital for the criminally insane to interview Dr. Hannibal "the cannibal" Lecter. A physicist who is needed to help give information about a serial killer on the loose called "Buffalo Bill".

Buffalo Bill is kidnapping and murdering young women Believing it takes one to know one, the F.B.I. sends Clarice Starling to interview a twisted prisoner who may provide psychological clues to the killer's actions. The prisoner is psychiatrist, Dr. Hannibal Lector, a murderous cannibal who will only help Starling if she feeds his curiosity with details about her own complicated life. This twisted relationship forces her not only to confront her  demons, but leads her to become face to face with a demented killer.

The film poster shows an extreme close up of a womans face all in black and white apart from her large brown eyes, which attract the reader into looking at her face and what surrounds her, and also could sway the reader into becoming interested in what she has seen. It also shows a Moth covering her mouth with patterns of a skull surrounding its body, the moth could be a symbol for silence and secrets as she cannot speak or sound out her troubles to anyone. It also draws more attention to the moth with the background being in black and white and makes the viewers wonder why it is there and for what reason too. It is a very simple movie poster but also a very clever one, as it does not give much away to the story line and keeps the viewers intrigued about what the moth is about, who the characters are and what the story line will unfold into.
