Full Film Idea

Me and my team mates arised with the idea of a subliminal take on our horror film trailer. We wanted to create a trailer which no one else would think of, to think outside of the box and not follow the usual convention lines of a bloody gore-filled horror trailer. We tried to create an idea of supernatural powers and imposements with the mindset of playing with peoples heads.

Two best friends would be taking a normal trip out in a car around the back ends of a quiet village when they spot a disfigurement in the woods and decide to take a closer look, which obviously doesnt take a good turn. It leads them to finding an Abandoned Ruins and deciding to take a look inside, with sunset looming over and darkness setting in it creates an intense atmosphere and builds a suspense in its own. Once the boys give the Ruins a check they split apart in eagerness to discover what else lies around, when one call isnt heard to the other, and falling into prey of the giant, bloodthirsty character, with an unknown identity hidden by a torn-up burlap sack. The other makes an escape and begins to run, hearing noises of a trapped, worried and defenseless boy. Once he escaped from the perculiar ruins, he had the thought of the creature playing on his mind about knapping his best friend, not knowing if he was safe and whether he was at fault. Having the guilt and concern over his friend, he starts to see his friends name appear everywhere, causing a horrible effect on his social life and barring him away from his close ones, leaving him a broken mess. He then returns from a routine shop to find the mask of the killer hanging on his door knob attatched to a photo of his best friend. He cannot keep the guilt and worry in his head no longer and begins to hunt for his friends body, and to take down the man who made his friend lifeless, eventually to find out when he arrives that his friend hasnt infact been killed, but in an attempt to kill the killer, he kills his friend, Becoming the killer.

We opted to follow the narrative structure of Todorovs theory, where he states that Equilibrium for all characters and settings would be positive and normal at the start of the trailer and film, but opted for the ending to take a turn for the worse, instead of having Equilibrium at the end it ends in horror and upset. It does include the upset to start the chain of unfortunate events, but it never spirals out of the event, just continues to mount up and get worse, until leading to death.

The key character types in our trailer include two normal characters, portayed by Kieran Browne and Louis Caseley as the two best friends who you see throughout the trailer. The typical horror villain included in our trailer is played by myself, Isaac Reeder. They were at the end of the scale compared to the types of characters that they would be playing, they could be seen as at one end being Functional, normal people and at the other end they are disfunctional, psycho killers. The two normal characters look like they are normal people, living normal lives which they are. We are trying to show the audience who they should support in the escape of death, and who to look out for when watching the full film just by viewing our trailer.

Within our trailer we have tried to show two obvious sides of Binary Opposition. The first one involves the characters played by my team members. Who is the normal conventional characters and who are the evil villain characters. They are at the complete end of the scale compared to each other and end up crossing paths on a few occasions, leading to massive consequences in the end. The second one was involving the weather. When the filming was done during the day-time we tried to create a sense of safety and pleasurable watching time, whilst it was filmed at night we tried to make it unnerving and uneasy for the viewer to watch, using scary characters and creepy locations to add emphasis to our points. These two also being at the opposite end of the Binary Opposition scale.

Our full film idea changed alot over the course of the making, but we are very happy with our planning and the way our trailer has developed through the course. We used our initiative on several occasions to try and make our trailer better, which we think went well. We filmed at great locations and tried to make our character's looks and clothing easy to identify who is on the good side and who is on the bad side. We hope that our ideas flow through our trailer, and to give off the same scary vibe that we felt it creates.
